Prospective Recess residents will undergo a rigorous application process, submitting a resume, artists’ statement, a letter of recommendation, and ten jpeg images/video representations or other ephemera, characterizing work created in the past two years. In addition, artists should include a statement of purpose that includes a description of the artist’s particular interest in the Recess Program, and a detailed proposal of a specific project the artist will develop during his or her residency.

In an effort to decentralize visual authority, but maintain quality and rigor, applications will then be reviewed by a panel consisting a former Recess artist in residence, two leaders from local and/or arts community, and two arts practitioners living and working in New York City. Visit the People page for panelist information

Selection:

Recess residents will be selected based on the artistic quality of their proposal and their ability to work productively within the program. This implies that successful applicants will articulate a particular need to work in a manner that defies traditional studio method and gallery exhibition. In addition, Recess artists chosen to occupy 41 Grand Street will express a particular desire or need to work in the designated neighborhood. These criteria have been left intentionally vague in order to give prospective artists a chance to describe the ways in which their particular practice belongs at Recess.

When you visit:
Most resident artists will choose to be present during public hours, connecting with visitors through participatory or performance-based activities.
